The 5 Deadly Venoms

Five Venoms aka Five Deadly Venoms is a cult 1978 Hong Kong martial arts film directed by Chang Cheh, starring the Venom Mob, and produced by the Shaw Brothers Studio, about five kung-fu fighters with unique animal styles: The Centipede, The Snake, The Scorpion, The Lizard and The Toad. The film was listed at number 11 on Entertainment Weekly’s Top 50 Cult Films list.

One of the most classic kung fu movies of all time. Often listed as the first kung fu movie fans recommend. It’s got the best of all, so no wonder it’s a cult classic. At heart it’s a murder mystery, of sorts, but it’s got solid “real” kung fu and the over-the-top insanity that the genre would come to be known for. A turning point for kung fu flicks. Not one of my top favorites but one of the most accessible and fun.

I’m a huge fan of kung fu and comic books, but very rarely do the two meet to produce something of significance. Early Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu from Marvel or Ma Wing-Shing’s ‘Fung Wan’ & ‘Chinese Hero’ are the best and really only notable  kung fu comics I’ve ever come across, but they both have the blessing of being created in the 70’s and actually from China, respectively.
The only other book that just nails down the spirit of kung fu, not just action/fighting movies, but actually learning skills, pitting fighting styles against one another, is INFINITE KUNG FU. This book was gorgeously printed before, with hilarious bad martial art movie reviews in the back, and if you click on the link above and read some, a lot of fun with some badass artwork.
I had first picked up an issue years ago, and met Kagan McLeod at MoCCA back in 2004 I think it was. When issues stopped coming out I felt like something was missing. I found it was on my very short list of books that I would independently fund to keep it coming out if I could. I can’t wait for this Top Shelf edition, this is seriously the best comic news I’ve heard in a long, long time.
Oh my god. The first 250 pages are available as a preview on Top Shelf’s site!! I can’t read it though, I’ll wait it out til I can get that beast of a book in my hands.

Directorial Debut of the Day: RZA makes a natural leap from loving the crap out of anything to do with kung fu, to directing and starring in a low-budget, 70s-style kung fu feature called Wu-Tang Vs. The Golden Phoenix (released date: TBD).

The hip hop icon says he made Golden Phoenix to prove to himself and Hollywood that he could be taken seriously as a director. He had some help from Eli Roth, who is billed as an executive producer for the film. The film also features several kung fu legends like Robert Tai, fight choreographer from the 1978 classic The Five Deadly Venoms. Golden Phoenix was made in the style of 1970’s “Kung Fu Theater” – grainy shots, crazy sound effects and lots of dubbing. RZA is well known for his kung fu obsession; just listen to any Wu-Tang album. Now he’s taken that vast knowledge of the genre to create “a world where everyone fights…and they’re all fighting for one thing – the Wu Tang weapon.”

Watch the official trailer above. An extended Red Band trailer can be seen here.

The red band trailer is better. Both have a weird vibe. But you had me at: RZA directs kung fu movie.
